A few days ago, Peter & I visited Amsterdam-Oost aka in Amsterdam-East! We came here to sit down & relax,… and to have some good coffee & cake, of course!
This is one lovely, cosy cool coffee bar! As you see, you have a small side & front terrace. We came here around 4 pm. It was very hot outside so we sat inside on a long lovely crafted wooden table with fun colorful chairs. You must order & pay at the counter. I had a lovely latte macchiato with soy milk & a lovely friand with pistachio, blueberries & almonds. It was superb but a bit too sweet for me. The barista told me that the bakery is specialized in American styled cakes & pastries. So, that explains a lot! My husband had a normal coffee & a slice of red velvet cake, also very yummy but also super sweet. We paid 11.70 Euro in total. The bar has a lovely cosy atmosphere & the woman barista is also very friendly & kind! A must! They also have a coffee roastery & bakery of these American styled cakes & pastries in the beginning of the same street! 🙂
A soy latte with soy milk for me & a tasty friand!
A red velvet cake for Peter & an Americano coffee!
So, the next time, you are in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, in Amsterdam-Oost, go there & enjoy your coffee & some cake. You won’t be disappointed! 🙂

I know now that you all loved reading my traveling Sophie: Leuven part 1, 2, 3, 4 & now, there is a part 5,…ooh yes!
The last time, I went there to visit my favorite all vegan shop Shavt, I ate lunch in one of my favorite world cafés, called Coop.Wereldcafé.coop, Joris Helleputteplein 2, 3000 Leuven. It is located at a quiet public square, 1 street away from the busy Parijsstraat, shopping street. Open? Tuesday till Saturday:11AM-11PM/Monday & Sunday: closed!
Kitchen is open from 12 AM till 2 PM & from 5.30 PM till 8 PM.
It looks great from the outside, right?
This cool world café is not just a café, it is a smaller bistro. All the foods they serve here are 80% organic + fair-trade + local! Not all the beverages are organic though. Every day, they serve lunch & dinner. You have to order & pay at the counter. They have a big black board, where they note down with chalk what there is on the menu. There are several vegetarian dishes on their menu. Every time, I come here, I eat vegetarian. I began with this:
Let’s see what you think of the interior?
Nice, am I right?
Then, I saw what was on the blackboard & ordered this:
These were 2 warmed tortilla wraps & a lovely mixed crunchy cabbage, carrot, cucumber salad with a lovely tangy yoghurt dressing, home-made guacamole, shredded cheese & a hot spiced tomato sauce with veggies & tofu bits in it. It was lovely & enough for me! It costed me : 11€. It was worth it! Everything was so fresh, organic & very delicious too. It was all good quality! The beer costed me: 1.8€. It looks great, right?
To end my lunch, I ordered a simple fennel herb tea & it was served with an organic speculoos. Yummm! The tea costed me: 2 €.
So, it was a lovely lunch at coop! 😉 Last Fall, I had this lovely fresh pressed juice:
Opposite of Coop, is this lovely shop, called Oplus!
This is a lovely shop with cool gadgets, retro or not. Here are some pictures from the owner’s website.
Mok Leuven, Diestsestraat 165, 3000 Leuven. In Summertime, I will review this lovely teeny tiny coffee bar & micro-roasterie!
The old gothic Predikheren church, that is also the eldest in our country, is now owned by 30CC, a cultural center in Leuven, situated at the side of this church. You will find this church at Onze-Lieve-Vrouwen straat. The interior of the church is now used for plays, exhibitions, dance, etc. It can hold 360 seats! Ooh yeah! So, you can’t go to church there anymore! Here is their website: http://www.30cc.be
Domus, an Inn or Taverne, Tiensestraat 8, 3000 Leuven. This restaurant or tavern is an institute in Leuven & far beyond! They also have a home brewery that you can visit when it is tourist season. You can see details on their website. See link above! When I was a child & visited Leuven with my parents, we would come here & have a spaghetti or steak with fries. The service is always great, excellent, it is crowded & busy & they sell good food, great drinks with a lot of beers, etc. The brewery produces its own beer, 2 to 3 types. Each year, they also sell a seasonal beer. They have many Gluten-free & vegetarian dishes on their menu!! The resto is very big & long. The interior is darker wood & not so cosy at all.
So, this is the end, my lonely friend,…The end,…for now, anyway! 😉 I hope you enjoyed the ride! xxx ♥ Stay Tuned & subscribe by email! Join 1,800 email subscribers now!!! It is free!!!! Click the link here below to subscribe!!!
A few days ago, I went to one of my favorite cities called Leuven. About 1 year ago, I posted 3 traveling Sophie posts about Leuven. I will give you the links below my post! 😉 The city lies in the Flemish speaking part of Flanders, In Brabant & is the capital city of Brabant. Is is about 35 min by train from where I live. Leuven is very well-known for itsinternational Catholic University, In Dutch: ( KUL )= Katholieke Universiteit Leuven! It is one of the oldest Universities of the Low-Lands. Leuven is also famous for their brewerie, Stella Artois!! Leuven is also a great foodies destination for me & has many cool foodie restaurants, foodie shops & places where also vegetarian eating is possible. You just have to find them! I also like the variety of many tiny, some larger & cool clothing, flower shops, etc!
I went there to go to my favorite all vegan shop called SHAVT. Shavt stands for SimplyHealthyAnd Vegan Things! You can find it on the smaller side street of the Tiensestraat. It is located in the Charles Deberiotstraat 2, 3000 Leuven. Open?Monday till Saturday from 12-18.30 h.It looks from the outside like this:
It is a smaller all vegan shop. All the things they sell here or edible & even non-edible like vegan shampoo, vegan soaps, vegan toothpastes, vegan deodorants, etc. I prefer the edible part, way more! They sell many different vegan edibles like vegan chocolates, vegan cereals, vegan burgers, based on seitan or on tofu, vegan sausages, vegan sliced sausages to put on vegan pizzas or on your sandwiches, vegan cheeses of 4 to 6 different brands like Valio, Wilmersburger, Vantastic foods’s vegan Parmesan, etc & the owner, Kobe, also makes his own cashew based spreadable cheeses. He also sells vegan food bars of the brand Naked! Just see it all for yourself!
And what about vegan chocolates, I hear you say? They well my favorite vegan chocolate brand of Vantastic foods, yum yum yum! They also sell more darker vegan chocolates, raw chocolates & even Plamil bars. You could even buy vegan Easter chocolates. They also sell the Vego bar with nuts! 😉 Ooh yes!
I reviewed my favorite chocolate bar, a while ago, You can read it here! Can I tempt you with these tasty vegan chocolates?
And what about these cool vegan brands & different products?
They sell a lot of different vegan products & some of them are gluten-free too. You can even order a lot of Gluten-free products here in this tiny shop! How cool is that? Here you see the vegan cheese counter with on top a few vegan candies! Cool, right?
Shavt also sells vegan ice-cream,…ooh yes! This is vegan rice ice-cream, locally made by an ice-cream shop nearby SHAVT. They make vegan ice-cream based on rice milk. Shavt sells 3 different flavors. You can but 500 ml pots & smaller coupes, made out of plastic. The 3 different flavors are:Very Vanilla: 8€,Chocolate Stracciatella: 8.25€ & Decadent Cherry: 8.50€ also for 500 ml! For the smaller coupes, there are 2 different one’s: Very chocolate: a combo of very vanilla & chocolate stracciatella: 4€ & the second one: Decadent Cherry Chocolate: a combo of decadent cherry & chocolate stracciatella: 4.25€! I need to try them all out in Summertime! 🙂 MMM!

We will start in De Hoogstraat. It is one of the stress that lead into the center of the city. From where I live, this is the way, into the city center. We have 2 African shops here, close to each other. Just before going in De Hoogstraat, you can find this African Asian shop. Here you can buy your chili peppers, kilo’s of rice, manioc, spicy sauces, etc.
Here is the mini-competition:
On the other side of the street, is a new candy shop! But they don’t have any vegan candies though,…:(
Snoep Goed, Hoogstraat 84, 2800 Mechelen. Open? Monday till Saturday from 10 AM till 5 PM. This candy shop has old-fashioned candy, bio or organic candy, sugar-free candy & special candy.
We are walking further in the road. Here on the right side, you have a really good butcher! 🙂 What a beautiful building too! Hoogstraat 25, 2800 Mechelen.
A bit further on the left side, you find a really good wine & spirit shop called Semprevino. Hoogstraat 2, 2800 Mechelen. This is a great wine, spirit shop. When I want to give a wine present or so to myself or friends, we go here & get great advice too. The wines are a bit more pricey then in the supermarket & but you will find great smaller top wines, champagnes, proseccos, etc. Little & larger drinkable jewels,..:) So it is worth it!
Now, we are moving to de Korenmarkt.
Moving along, we arrive at De Zoutwerf with a cool coffee & teashop, calledSimon Lévelt. This is a Dutch chain of coffee-tea shops. They well more than 130 teas & a lot of coffees too. I love their coffee, coffee mugs, chocolates, syrups to put in my coffee, etc.
At the end of this street, you have this glorious building.
When you see this picture, on the right hand side, you have 2 great patissiers, Vanderbeek & a bit further Savarin! Vanderbeek is known as the best patissier in Mechelen. Here are some tasty pictures.
Saturday, December the 6th, it is Sinterklaas! You all, outside Europe, don’t celebrate him. But I made these tasty speculaas biscuits a few years ago & you can read all about ithere & you can make your own speculaas biscuits too: Sophie’s festive speculaas! :) Enjoy!
Then, you will arrive at my favorite chocolatier: Neuhaus!
Neuhaus is located close to De Grote Markt. Neuhaus is a famous Belgian chocolatier. Their chocolates are a bit more expensive then other Belgian chocolatiers. They are also Hofleverancier. That means that they deliver to The Belgian Royal family! So, if it is good to the Royal family , it is certainly good for us! 🙂 More yummy pictures:
Now, you are at De Grote Markt!
Now, a picture from the opposite side:

Today, I went traveling in my own neighborhood, Mechelen. Mechelen is a cool city in Flanders, the Flemish ( Dutch) speaking part of Belgium. This glorious city lies 25 km north of Brussels & 25 km south of Antwerp!
Mechelen is famous for many things! It has a smaller city centre, so that you can do everything on foot or on a bike! 😉 You can find many different cool clothing shops, foodie shops, great cafés, cool coffee bars. We have great museums, lovely restaurants, old buildings with a lot of history in them, great hotels & we are also friendly people! 🙂 We, Mechelaars bike a lot.
It looks cosy, right? De Yzerleen is a square where you find many cool cafés, lovely coffee bars & cool clothing shops. You can also find here a good cheese shop, a good butcher, etc.
The famous Sint-Rombouts Toren. ( Sint-Rombaulds Tower!) This huge tower with added church is very famous. Mechelen has many older buildings that are an UNESCO world heritage site. We also have de Sint-Rombouts Toren. (St Rumbold’s Tower in English ) The 97-metre tower became the symbol of Mechelen.
Building work by the Keldermans family of architects on this imposing Mechelen monument began in 1452. Times and circumstances changed and as a result the tower was never completed.
The city’s most important documents used to be kept in this fortified tower, which was also the belfry. The bells in the tower served to tell the townspeople the time and to sound the alarm in the event of danger. The tower also made a good vantage point: from here you could see the enemy arriving from a long way off. Nowadays, you can visit the skywalk. There is no elevator, just a long array of steps! But it is worth it! On a good clear day, you can see the port of Antwerp & the skyline of Brussels! A skywalk visit will cost you 8€!
After this refreshing drink, I walked further in my beloved town.
This is on the street between de Yzerleen & de Grote Markt! After a while, I was getting hungry & I thought, I will stop here & have some food!
Le Pain Quotidienis a bakery & you have a commune table over here & normal tables too where you can sit, relax & have a bite to eat. This famous bakery has spread all over the world. But its origin is Belgian! Yes!They have 16 Le Pain Quotidien in Belgium. Adresse? Yzerleen 15, 2800 Mechelen.
Most of the produce they make here is organic & of very good quality! I read about Le Pain Quotidien, that is in Los Angeles, that they have a large vegan food section. In this spot here in Mechelen, they serve a few vegan food dishes since begin February 2014. So, I thought, I am going to try them out. This is what I chose.
I chose a large Bio café latte with organic soy milk. This was 4.20€.That is a lot of money but I find that this is the best soy café latte in town!I received an organic dark chocolate with it! Yum Yum!
You can choose between breakfasts, lunch items, lunch suggestions, tartines ( these are open-faced sandwiches, but on real organic wheat bread slices, all home-made.) All of the breads, they make here, are vegan. They only use organic flours, water & salt! They serve a large variety of coffees, café lattes, teas, home-made ice-teas in Summer, fresh mixed juices or smoothies, lovely koffie koeken, buns, chocolate mini breads, tartlets, cakes & buns. You also can eat salads, evening suggestions, you can eat outside or inside. This bakery & eating area is very large. There is even a sitting-dinig area upstairs for parties!
On the list left of my coffee, this is the list where you can find out what is vegan. Vegan food items, are listed with a carrot in front of them. 😉 I looked on the list & will give you a few things that are vegan & how much it cost! In every section of the foods, there is only 1 or 2 items vegan. There is a lot more vegan in the breakfast area.
A bowl with fresh fruits, a small one: 4.80€, a bowl with fresh fruits, big: 6.80€.
Bio rice pudding with soy milk or/and apricots: 4.80€.
A bio muffin: 4.10€
I took the vegan lunch tar tine of the day: Just look at it, doesn’t it look so delicious??
It was just so delicious, but you could add a lovely tasty salad with this, but I found that these side salads are way too much for me. The dressing in the side salad is not normally not vegan though!
MMM,..It was. It costed me 9.40€. I will give you some inside pictures of this famous bakery!
So this was part 1! I hope you enjoyed it! 🙂 See you all later! xxx

My first stop, was this cool vegan organic clothing shop called: Hemp MadeAddress? Parijsstraat 14, 3000 Leuven. Open? Tuesday till Saturday from 10h till 18h.
This is a very interesting vegan + organic clothing shop. A lot of the T-shirts for women & men, are a bit too normal for me. They look like shirts & pants that you would wair on music festivals when you were 15 or so but I also tried a few one’s on that would be great when you practise yoga. You have a man’s department & a woman’s department. All of the clothes are vegan & organic too. I bought 2 cool female shirts & each one of them costed me 29€. They are both made from bio-cotton & from hemp. They are of a great quality. Here they also sell vegan cloths from the Belgian brand: Uprise!
What is hemp good for, I hear you say?
There are more than 25000 products that could be made out of hemp like paper, textiles, paints, foods & beverages, body products, building materials, eco-plastics, polymers, oils, etc….
Hemp grows nearly everywhere, also in Asia & Africa.
Hemp was used mostly for about 80% for clothing & in the textile industry, before the roaring twenties!!
Hemp can always be ecological grown.
Hemp is stronger than cotton, it absorbs water better & it is rigid.
Hemp seeds are extremely nutritious! After soy beans, they are very high in proteins, but better digestible! The hemp seeds are rich in omega 3-6-9 & vitamin B.
Hemp clothing is very comfortable. Hemp cloths are warm in Winter & cool in Summer!
1 t-shirt is made of van 55% hemp + 45% bio cotton, it can save more than 2500 liter (mostly drinkable) water instead of 1 normal t-shirt made from the normal cotton alone!
Then, It was time for lunch! I was on my own today so I wanted to treat myself to a nice tasty vegan eco lunch@ The Loving Hut Leuven! Address? Tiensestraat 65, 3000 Leuven. You can’t book a table when you are alone or with 3 persons, only if you are with 4 persons or more!! Open?Monday till Friday from 11.30 h until 14 h & from 17 h till 21 h. Saturday from 12 h till 14 h & from 17 h till 21 h! Sunday’s closed! It is a more smaller tiny longer restaurant. You must order at the counter & pay there too. If you have an EVA card, you will get a discount of 5%. You can take drinks & desserts directly out of the fridge. They don’t sell any alcohol here! They also sell vegan dog & vegan cat foods from the brand Ami. A strange combination, I think! The only downside is that they have cute smaller white sitting stools but there isn’t a back for your back. If you sit there for a while, your back hurts a bit! 😦
The Loving Hut in Leuven! A vegan tiny restaurnat that is also bio!
An empty restaurant just before the midday rush hour!
The Loving Hut logo!
I was really hungry, so what would I choose from the limited Lunch menu? Let’s see,…;) In the evening, they have more choice & it is less-student like! Then, there are suggestions, written on the blackboard! 🙂
I sipped from my vegan Bionade elderflower drink!
The Limited Lunch Menu!
I chose the juicy Loving Hut soy burger!!! For just 6€, all vegan & organic too, even the toasted bread roll! Just check it out for yourself, hey, doesn’t it looks fabulous & appetizing too???
Now, let’s deconstruct it & check it all out:
On the outside of the top bun, were sesame seeds & the bun was toasted, inside of the top bun, was a lovely layer of their home-made vegan sour veganaise, topped with a big slice of fresh organic tomato, a few thinly sliced red onions rings, on top of the soy burger, some thin slices of gherkins, aka pickles, the juicy soy burger, shreded crispy iceberg lettuce, good & much tomato ketchup & a toasted bun! Divine! Superb! Waw even! I was stunned! The soy burger didn’t taste as a soy burger, no soy flavour what so ever! The burger looked like a real meat burger too! I gobbled it up nicely! 🙂 Then, after a while, I was ready for a nice dessert, so what did I chose? Just look & see:
I chose a fresh mint tea, in a large mug & lovely presented too. It costed me 3.5€. The cake of the day, was this fabulous large piece of airy light cake, filled with a soy crème fraîche & a stunning rich vegan chocolate hazelnut spread. The top ganache was melted chocolate with vegan cream & orange,…The cake slice was huge & pretty amazing, rich but light too! I was smiling all the way for a while,… 🙂
There were other tasty looking desserts in their fridge like personal chocolate mousse pots, portioned tiramisu’s, a darker more heavy-looking chocolate tart & my cake! 😉 Yummmm! They all look delicious, just see for yourself:
So, my dear beloved friends, I hope you liked this last post, all vegan, about Leuven! If you are ever in the area, call me or give me a shout on my blog that you are coming to Belgium & we should meet in the loving hut or in de V-rex! xxxx 🙂
