Travelling Sophie: Bokes & Co!

Hello everyone,

Long time no see, right? 😉

Thanks for the many lovely emails I got from you all asking what had happened to me. I loved reading them all,… so thanks! 🙂

Lately, my husband Peter & I have worked hard in our allotment garden. So, that is where we were for the last weeks. The garden isn’t totally ready yet, but we are getting there! Photos will be posted shortly.

Now for something completely different! I want to introduce you to a super lovely cosy breakfast & lunch restaurant in our beloved town of Mechelen. It is called: Bokes & co & that means in my language: Sandwiches etcetera! It is about a 10 minute walk from where we live. I love coming here, so does my hubby & my dad. It is run by passionate people with their heart in the right place. It looks like this from the outside:

There are older colourful chairs & tables with a mix of different styles but overall it is very cosy & fun! The owners & staff are very friendly & helpful. I come here a lot. You can have breakfast here or lunch. You can just enjoy a pot of yummy tea with a cake or not. I love reading a book here, sip some lovely tea & watch the world go by,…

Cosy & fun!

When we go to have a sandwich here, every time, I take something else & everything (food & drinks) that are served here is all of a good quality & quantity too! 😉 A look at the bokes & co card menu:

You can choose between lovely filled sandwiches with a side salad, burgers, Panini with salad, different big salads to choose from, croquet, etc! It is up to you! The prices are good for what you get on your plate!

Today, I was alone, I took the sandwich with smoked salmon, apple, red onion slices & fresh dill with side salad! Super tasty!  I drank a lovely café latte with honey & soy milk! MMM! Most of the time, especially during lunchtime, it is super busy until 1.30 pm.

Travelling Sophie: Brewery De Halve Maan, Bruges!

A few weeks ago, Peter & I travelled for 3 days to Bruges. One of the highlights of our stay was a guided visit to the brewery De Halve Maan in the city center of Bruges. It is situated at the Walplein. We booked this brewery trip at home at the computer. We chose our own language & tour time too. A great visit but the groups were a bit too large tough. This was the only downside. It is best to book in advance at home, to avoid long waiting times! A lovely local brewery with a lovely guide through the old part of the brewery & they tell you how the beer is produced. The tour guide is funny & tells anecdotes. It is very interesting too. You end up on the roof of the brewery so you have lovely views across the center of Bruges! The tour lasts 45 minutes & then you get an unfiltered brugse zot to drink afterwards in the brasserie. It is worth a visit! You only get the unfiltered version on a tour like this!

For centuries the Maes family has brewed beer on the Walplein in Bruges. The brewery exists since 1856!!! Ooh yes! De halve maan this means: the half of the moon, see photo below!

The history of the brewery is contained in a unique museum. Guided tours are organised every day. Tours are organised daily between 11 am and 4 pm, in Dutch, French and English. On Saturday an extra tour can be followed at 5 pm. A visit in German is possible on demand. The price for a visit is 9,00 euro per person and takes 45 minutes. After the tour you get a degustation of a Brugse Zot Blond, the unfiltered version, in the brasserie of the brewery. They are famous for 2 great beers:

Brugse Zot is a delicious golden natural blonde beer, brewed according to a unique and traditional recipe. It has a rich foam collar and a fruity yet spicy bouquet. The beer is brewed with four different kinds of malt and two aromatic varieties of hop which give the beer its inimitable taste.The one and only townbeer of Bruges!!!! Today the Brugse Zot, together with the Straffe Hendrik, is the only beer brewed in the historical town center of Bruges. The palate is complex and tends towards a certain bitterness. Even hints of citrus can be discovered. Brugse Zot is a natural beer, born out of a selection of only the best ingredients. The refermentation in the bottle creates a longer natural preservability.When it comes to food pairing, the beer is at its best when combined with fish and crustaceans, beef or desserts with red fruits.  So, this brewery is worth a visit! A photo trip through Bruges & Sanseveria Bagelsalon!

As you all know by now, Peter & I went on the 3 day tour in Bruges 2 weekends ago. I shall you give a lovely mini photo tour here & will review a lovely place called: Sanseveria Bagel Salon! As a lot of you now, it is not easy to find good cool fun places to hang out, drinking a latte or a nice cup of tea without it being a tourist trap. And you also need to book a table in advance. Normally, in Belgium, being a coffee bar or so, you don’t need to do that at all! That is the downside of being in Bruges. Helas!

Every day, we walked a lot & the last day, after visiting the Groeninge Museum, we booked a table 1 hour in advance at this lovely cosy Sanseveria Bagelsalon! Sanseveria is the type of plant, that you would see, many years ago & still now, at the front windows at houses of grand-parents. It is this plant: 
Nowadays, you see it more & more getting back into fashion. You also see it more in young people’s houses! 😉

We went there to grab a lovely filled bagel & some coffee too. It looked like this from the outside:

My bagel was just so delicious & my vegan cafe latte with soy milk too. This is how the bagel menu looked like:

Only 1 vegan option!!!

There is only 1 vegan bagel option, not much, I say! They state there are 2 vegan options but goat’s cheese is not vegan at all! I took the Ron Bgel & my hubby Peter took the Edward Bagel. I chose a vegan cafe latte with soy milk & my Peter took a normal coffee. The quality of the coffee was superb. I never have eaten many bagels before in my life but this was the 1st bagel I really liked! It is very cosy there & prices are more cheap for eating in Bruges. 🙂 They also have another bagel salon in Ostend. Here is their adresse:

Kok au vin, Bruges!

Last weekend, Peter & I took a 3 day trip to the lovely medieval town of Bruges. We were there for 3 whole days. And what a blast we had!! We had fun, fun, fun & visited a few attractions & museums too. One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to one of the 13 most fabulous restaurants in Bruges. Kok au vin is such a place. It has a 13/20 for 2017, in the guide Gault-Millau. This fine restaurants sits in the beginning of the less-known street: Ezelstraat. It started to rain & we arrived just in time, at this lovely restaurant. It has a lovely, cosy modern interior & feel. We had booked a table for 2 a few weeks in advance. We went there at lunchtime. This is how the restaurant looked at where we sat:

In Kok au Vin, you can choose different menus.

You can eat à la carte & make your own 3 course meal. Of course, this way is all becomes a whole lot more expensive. You see?

We opted for this one: the 3 course lunch menu of the day at 28 Euros. You can also choose a 2 or 1 course meal. It is up to you.

And we started with this lovely mushroom soup with croutons, blue cheese & raw sliced mushrooms: Creamy & so yummy with that melted blue cheese.

The next one, was the main course: Pork belly with a scallop, yellow carrots, normal carrots, beet crisps, pumpkin purée, yellow carrot sauce & grilled quinoa crumble. Super delicious & light!

Then, we finished with this lovely dessert. White chocolate panna cotta with mango, passionfruit sorbet, mandarin pieces & a mandarin sorbet. There was also a nice crunchy white chocolate bit. The green sauce was a verbena sauce. It was topped with a cookie & pistachio crumble. The white chocolate panna cotta wasn’t so sweet just perfect!!!

Fabulous dessert!

It was a lovely lunch with top products & the staff is also very friendly & youthful. We both gave this a 10/10! Here is their address & website.

Le Perroquet!

A few weeks ago, we went to visit Brussels, the capital of Belgium! 🙂 We walked a lot & after a while, we were hungry & came here to eat something nice. A few years before, this was a very fancy & expensive French inspired restaurant, mostly visited by business people & way too expensive for us! Now, this neighborhood is very in with the hip modern youth & has become a pita & salad resto but one with good quality of food! They have a big front & side terrace with wooden banks & colorful seating places. It now has the same interior a before, that from a French bistro but the exterior is different. Now, there is much more color added. Can you guess which color?

Indeed, it is the color ORANGE! Ha!

We were welcomed by the friendly staff & our table was cleaned too. We looked at the menu & chose 2 lovely salads. We ordered 1/4 bottle of red wine. It was a nice one too. Let’s see, hey?

I ordered The Liège salad. It was a bunch of mixed lettuce, rocket leaves, crispy fried bacon, fried white onion pieces, cooked cold green beans & a peeled quartered boiled egg. It was topped with a nice fresh mustard vinaigrette! It was super delicious! Grilled pita halves were served with our salads. Peter took the Rock Fort salad. This salad was also a mix of different crispy lettuce, walnut halves, pieces of mild rockfort cheese & a honey-mustard dressing. He was very pleased too! I don’t know anymore how much we paid but it wasn’t that much. I think about 15 Euros for my salad. The big full bowls were enough for us & with the added grilled pita halves our bellies were full! 😉

Zür Post!

The last few years, Peter & I dine & wine in the 1 Michelin starred restaurant called Zür Post in the center of Sankt Vith. This is in the German-speaking part of Belgium. This is a smaller cosy modern restaurant located in the center, in the head street of the lovely town of Sankt Vith. We go there once a year in Summertime with my parents. We chose a 1 night stay & have booked the wine & dine arrangement. This includes 1 night in a hotel room included is per person: a 7 course menu surprise + wine arrangement + 1 night in a hotel room + breakfast! There are several arrangements to choose from. This is the chef & his lovely wife:

My mom & I chose not to take the wine with our 7 course dinner but we chose to have a glass of champagne in the beginning. The chef works seasonal & with the best ingredients. He is very modern in his cooking style. His wife is a very charming woman. It is a 1 Michelin starred restaurant & has 16/20 in the guide Gault & Millau. It is worth the money! You can book several different arrangements. You choose, it is up to you. The prices are a bit more high but not overpriced because of his 1 Michelin star! A cool modern interior! It is the best 1 Michelin starred restaurant that I have ever visited!!! A BIG PLUS & A MUST!!! We all had dinner in the lovely garden set with beautiful modern white tables & silverware! 😉

I haven’t got photos from the champagne & appetizers!!!

1st course! This was raw smoked swordfish on a bed of green lentils, tomato & red onion pieces, a bit of chili & topped with fried rice noodles: very fresh & light! Perfect to begin with! 🙂

2nd course: Salmon Trout flambé from the valley of the Ourthe with a sweet & sour ratatouille & a tomato broth! Delicious! Every flavor goes so well together & is light in the mouth! 🙂

3rd course: Soft Turbot wrapped into kataifi, (this is a very fine vermicelli like pastry normally used for Middle-Eastern deserts) with spring onions, a rhubarb sauce with black pepper.

4th course: Ravioli filled with Chanterelle mushrooms, duck’s liver & sliced summer’s truffles in a chanterelle broth & sauce. I am not fond of duck’s liver at all so I didn’t eat that. I thought that this as more of an autumnal dish but my parents & Peter loved it all! 🙂

5th course: Veal from the Limousin region with flavors saltimbocca, (perfect in temperature & cuisson), with a lovely risotto with sage oil & with candied tomatoes. A pretty plate & beautiful on the tongue too! 🙂

6th course: My Peter & dad took the cheese platter. It looked like this:

My mom & I received an alternative for this & it was worth it: flammkuchen! It was superb in flavor, a bit salty, with the bacon & melted cheese, sweet with the green grapes & a bit sweet-sour with the mango onion chutney! yum!

Then we all got a lovely interlude to the dessert: small but very rich! It was a sort of delicate filled praline with a praliné ganache on the inside with crushed lime-pistachio flavors on the outside! Waw! Super rich & perfect in flavors! Waw!

7th course: The piece de résistance! Ha! A sort of yoghurt with blueberries on a bed of white wine jelly & with an espuma of vanilla! On top of it, were dried apple slices, dried chocolate beetroot slices! This was the best dessert ever! So light too! 🙂 So modern!

Afterwards, we took tea & coffee in the modern salon inside. We got also lovely pralines to choose from. No photo tough! 😦

East 57!

About 2 weeks ago, Peter & I travelled to Amsterdam-Oost in The Netherlands. I talked about Rum Baba, The Tropenmuseum & Bar Basquiat! Now, I am going to talk about a lovely restaurant were we had a nice delicious dinner in East 57! It is situated, nearby the Transvaalkade in Amsterdam-Oost!

After 20-25 minutes of walking we ended at the restaurant.

In the back there is also a hotel attached. Hotel casa Amsterdam. There were a lot of American guests in the hotel & also in the restaurant! We went here in the early evening. It was 6 pm & we had no dinner reservations. We were welcome by friendly staff & we could choose where we wanted to sit. This is how it looked on the inside:

A modern cool interior!

East 57 includes a modern restaurant, a wine bar, a coffee shop and a deli. East 57 offers different sorts of soups, salads, sandwiches/burgers, platters and meat and cheese dishes made from fresh ingredients.The restaurant menu has lots of other local delicacies sourced from Amsterdam and its regions. Peter took this lovely East 57 burger: a Black Angus beef burger with paprika onions, lettuce, bacon, Cheddar cheese & a home-made sauce. This was also served with yummy fries & a mustard-mayo. Super yummy juicy burger & the works! it costed 16,95 Euro. MMMMM!

I took the vegetarian Dutch Weed Burger! No, no, not weed aka drugs but Seaweed! Ha! It costed also 16,95 Euro. Two grilled sewed buns, that is why, they are green with a burger of seaweed & soy meat, baba ganoush, a slice of goat’s cheese, grilled green courgette & a weed sauce, also served with crispy fries & a home-made mustard-mayo! Delicious!

The portions & sizes of the burgers were huge & that is why, there was no room in our bellies for dessert!!! Peter took a white & tea & I took an Earl-Grey tea. We drank a bottle of sparkling water & Peter a white beer from the local brewery het IJ. The check was nearly 50 Euro. We will come back! 🙂 Then we walked back via the Transvaalkade to our car park & went home.
